Chimerix

Commitment

Chimerix was founded with the aim of radically improving the way viruses are treated. We initially saw an opportunity to combine a known antiviral with an intriguing technology to create a new treatment option for smallpox, historically one of the greatest viral threats to humankind. As we learned more about CMX001, we have seen its potential across numerous applications.

Potentially Less Toxic, More Potent Options

Antiviral therapies have come a long way since the veteran scientists on our team began their careers, but there remains a tremendous need for new treatment options to combat viral resistance and address unmet needs.

CMX001, is a second-generation antiviral that is much more potent in vitro than the parent compound, cidofovir, against multiple double-stranded DNA viruses (such as variola [smallpox], cytomegalovirus, BK virus, adenovirus and Epstein-Barr virus).  Based on data obtained to date, CMX001’s profile may allow physicians to treat patients much earlier and more effectively in the disease course, as opposed to many current therapies where the risks of serious and harmful side effects delays treatment.

CMX001 is just the beginning of our efforts….  In addition, we are applying our expertise to the development of other novel antiviral agents – with aim of improving treatment outcomes.  Leveraging our PIM Conjugate Technology and mining the high-value leads available from our Townsend Chemical Library, we are advancing a pipeline of promising antiviral agents which, like our lead candidate, have the potential to revolutionize the treatment of life-threatening diseases.

"We are breaking new ground by applying a unique technology to broaden the potential of a drug for very sick patients and giving physician new options."

— George Painter, Ph.D., Chimerix’s President and CEO
